/The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby (2013) is a drama-romance adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Long Island-set novel.

When Writer and Wall Street Trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbour, Jay Gatsby, cracks emerge and obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

Being intimately involved in finishing the look and deliverables, Cutting Edge supplied a team of nine artists led by Adrian Hauser to contribute set-up of workflows, DI stereo grade, opticals design and creation, theatrical deliverables – all in stereoscopic 3D.

Cutting Edge Colourist, Adrian Hauser, established the complex workflows in DI. Shot as a true stereoscopic feature, The Great Gatsby wasn’t post converted, so this required colouring and a 3D finishing workflow conformed, aligned and graded in 3D from start to end. Incorporating multiple poetic 3D multi-layer dissolves, resizes and transitions, the conform was predominantly finished and stereoscopically sweetened in Baselight.

Adrian believes that creating the look was an inspirational challenge and an opportunity to implement his full range of skills.

“The 3D grade on Gatsby was, in fact, a very delicate process to enhance the subtle colour nuances for final theatrical presentation.”

Our team was also instrumental in the creation of the film’s opticals. Aside from being a device favoured by the Director, Baz Luhrmann, Gatsby’s opticals reference the grand tradition of the 1920s, where they were extensively employed as the special effects of the day. In conjunction with the Bazmark design team we worked to convey a rich tapestry of multi-layered graphics, dissolves, and transitions.

“Adrian's precise sensibilities in the digital realm...allowed the whole team to go far beyond our expectations on Gatsby in finding the vibrancy and color as described in F Scott Fitzgerald's novel”
